Remembering Lucie Perez

Lucie was filled with so much faith, joy, and love. She became my first mentor at St. Edward’s and, even more so, a mom for other student workers and I. From the first day I met Lucie, I knew we felt a special connection stemming from our Valley background and love for the university. I was so gracious she decided to offer me a position and work under her supervision for the duration of my time as an undergrad. My favorite thing at the office was hanging out by her desk and hearing all of her stories while eating the candy she had hidden. From her organizational skills to her incredible smile and laughter, I was constantly reminded that Lucie was truly one of the most wonderful humans I had the pleasure of getting to know.

She always encouraged me to finish my education and give back to my community, just as her legacy will now live on through her CAMP Endowed Scholarship at the university. She was one of the few individuals who would call me “Lupita” or “Anita” and bring a smile to my face every time she did. I will always appreciate our time together, even in her last days. Although I am heartbroken to know she is no longer with us, I firmly believe she is watching over us from above in the kingdom of Heaven. Her kindness and humility will continue to inspire me.

I love you, Lucie. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
